Going the Distance with Access Water4 Zambia

“When communities realize that they have played a part in a project’s long term success, through organizing themselves and managing to pay for a service, that confidence empowers them to make changes in other areas where they would like to see improvements.”

When families are given access to safe water, everything changes. In Zambia, safe water comes from Access Water4 Zambia (AW4Z). AW4Z was created in 2014 to provide sustainable safe water and sanitation solutions through local entrepreneurs and empowered communities. They have a vision to see communities transformed both physically and spiritually.

AW4Z has worked with local authorities in Samfya and Chifunabuli since 2014 to design and deliver WASH programs, providing access to safe water for 78,500 people through 505 water points, 14 of which serve rural health centers with maternity wards and treatment rooms.

This summer, Water4 is Going the Distance with a spotlight on Access Water4 Zambia. AW4Z will provide over 18,000 people in the most rural parts of Zambia with safe water in 2021. They have a goal to provide total coverage to two districts by 2024, and they are already well on their way to this goal.

In order to complete this project, we have a goal to raise $400,000 this summer through the generosity of donors across the country and a generational matching gift from Paul M. Milburn Gift Fund. The Paul M. Milburn Gift Fund has committed  $150,750, We invite you to join us and automatically double your impact in Zambia.

Your support will Go The Distance and change lives forever by:

  • Providing safe, sustainable water, serving 18,150 people in the Samfya and Chifunabuli Districts of Zambia in 2021
  • Allowing Access Water4 Zambia to install 190 new water points this year
  • Providing needed funds to the overall mission of Water4, including the completion of a total of 1,030 new safe water points this year

Recently, Carmen Brubacher, the director of Access Water4 Zambia said the following when asked about safe water in Zambia: “Providing safe water in Samfya and Chifunabuli Districts is so much more than the immediate impact of better family health and livelihoods. When communities realize that they have played a part in a project’s long term success, through organizing themselves and managing to pay for a service, that confidence empowers them to make changes in other areas where they would like to see improvements. We have seen communities open preschools, identify and develop safe areas for young women to be able to walk to school, and advocate for a mother’s shelter at a clinic where mothers can stay while they nurse their family members. Families can make choices when they have reliable water without fear of having to go back to what they once used. They can plan for the future they want for their children with the confidence that they will accomplish what they plan. Water4 has provided the opportunity. Access Water has provided the service. We look forward to what the communities in Samfya and Chifunabuli will be able to achieve when they have safe water for all.”

Your support of Going the Distance will mean that Water4 can bring safe water coverage to the last mile…making a generational impact for every home, school, and clinic in Zambia this year. It will ensure that Access Water4 Zambia can give 18,750 people dependable water infrastructure that will change their lives forever.
