The technology/business model package has been refined over the past 10 years. It is built around ongoing operations costs, is easy to maintain, and modular.

Trusted
Brand

In small towns, Water4-businesses operate small piped water systems, called NUMA, that deliver high-quality, safe water to consumers. NUMA is a branded product sold in four countries and is quickly becoming a recognized and trusted brand across the region.

Fit
-For-
Purpose

The NUMA Nexus is the central hub with a high-capacity well and treatment system. NUMA Node and Nano sub-stations offer different size capacity for walk-up customers. Finally, NUMA Now connections provide convenient services at a household, clinic, business, or school. The NUMA system is fit-for-purpose and grows with the community as demand increases; modules are added or removed to respond to changing market opportunities.

Safe Water Solution

Status quo water infrastructure is centralized, heavy, and expensive to maintain. Water4 offers a better solution. By their very structure, businesses must adapt, innovate and grow with evolving water markets. They have dual incentives toward self-reliance and market expansion in a way that is modular, fit-for-purpose and climate-resilient.

NUMA

In Health Care Facilities

Tapping into safe and affordable Water4 NUMA water has bubbled up into many more opportunities than just health and convenience for households. For frontline workers like Harriet Quagraine, community health nurse at The Community Health and Planning Services (CHPS) health centre in Sekeyere Aboaboso (Wassa East District in Ghana), Water4’s NUMA water has enabled her to do what she does best. “Now I can supervise and ensure my patients wash their hands before taking their medication, and start out by taking it at the right time and right dosage without asking them to go home and buy sachet water for their medicine. I am very happy,” said Harriet. The CHPS health centre in Sekeyere Aboaboso has its own piped connection to NUMA water. Lead nurse, Dorcas Appiah, is delighted they no longer have to send patients away to fetch water, especially mothers who are giving birth or children with high temperatures. “Now, mothers and healthcare workers can properly wash their hands with soap before attending to newborns.”

To date, 4Ward Development in Ghana has provided piped water connections to 16 health care facilities, and has supplied 13 hand washing stations to HCFs.

Economies
of Scale

NUMA water systems can supply 10 times more water than a typical hand pump; economies of scale supported by pre-paid metering, and high densities of water points, keep services flowing.  Moreover, the simplicity of the network and treatment system means that the business can cover its operating expenses as revenue grows. Businesses have every incentive to connect more households, which increases their profitability, equipment replacement funds, and helps achieve the Sustainable Development Goals at a regional scale.

NUMA Water

Water quality and safety

Distant hand pumps may be safe, but the walk, lines and pumping labor mean many default to the closest not the cleanest water.

NUMA water is treated to World Health Organization (WHO) standards, and available when needed. NUMA is a multi-national brand known for quality and safety.

Affordability

For safety, people inconsistently purchase expensive sachet or bottled water. If only a cup of clean cured the disease from a cup of unsafe water.

NUMA water costs up to 10 times less than sachet water, providing an alternative safe water drinking source that is between 3-5% of household income (meeting WHO affordability standards).

Convenience

Low demand for safe water is often due to lack of convenience; water is heavy, so unsafe sources are often defaulted if they are closer to home.

NUMA Now connections bring safe water to a home, school, clinic or business. NUMA Now customers purchase 5 times more water than NUMA fetch point customers because of the convenience.
